Just when you thought the AI hype train couldn’t take another sharp turn, here comes the next wild rumour: OpenAI is apparently working on a social network. Because clearly what the internet needs is more algorithmically generated nonsense pretending to be meaningful interaction.

According to reports, the platform is in early development, but the idea is to build something “based on X” (Twitter, for those still pretending it’s not called that), except infused with OpenAI’s tools. Think ChatGPT’s text generation and DALL·E’s image creation.

So not a social network for AIs (thankfully), but one powered by them. Presumably a place where your friends are bots, your feed is generated, and everyone’s opinion is brought to you by language models trained on Reddit and Wikipedia. Sounds healthy.

OpenAI hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, but sources say they’re asking around quietly and gauging reactions. Which probably means, “waiting to see how much backlash we get before pretending this was always a harmless experiment.”

Couple of questions:
  • Are we finally skipping the part where humans create content at all?
  • Will this new platform come with a setting to turn off the AI-generated compliments?
  • And does this mean ChatGPT is about to start posting thirst traps?
If OpenAI actually goes through with this, they’ll be muscling into territory owned by Meta and Musk. Which means the future of social media could just be three companies yelling code at each other.

Discuss below. Bonus points for naming this thing before they do. My bet’s on: Chattr.
