Everyone jokes about Alexa listening in, but how much of that is real concern vs. conspiracy-theory noise?
Have you ever had a sneaky suspicion that your Alexa is spying on you? It's weird, really, that we have these devices in our house which are always listening to what's being said. On the surface, your device is only listening for its wake word: Alexa, or Computer, Echo, Siri? But it has to listen to everything to hear your wake word right?
Have you ever had a situation where an advert has popped up, or a product suggestion has been presented on Amazon based on a conversation you had - coincidence or invasive marketing? How do you feel about that? I do wonder whether our conversations are being used to improve the model. To learn our voices, our tone and inflections. But then also to learn our likes and dislikes to improve the algorithm? Folks, like everything, these devices are there to sell us stuff.
Is this something you have considered before? Concerned or dismissive of the conspiracy?
